Influences 関 わ る

  • Natsuko (Mishima's grandmother) was a big part of Mishima’s early life as she took him from his immediate family and raised him for several years. She was a violent person and often had outbursts. She was the one that influenced Mishima’s fascination of death.

  • As a descendant of Japanese samurai, Mishima was greatly influenced by Bushido, the way of the warrior. The seppuku that Mishima performed was a direct influence from bushido. He also loved the feudal Japanese culture.

  • As a child, Yukio Mishima was inspired by the works of Japanese poet Michizō Tachihara to write poetry. Poetry was also what introduced Mishima to the literary world.

  • Japanese author and Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata was one of the greatest influences on Mishima. As an established author, he guided Mishima, who would ask for advice. Mishima even wrote a series of essays about Kawabata in 1949.
