Yukio Mishima lived his entire life in Tokyo, Japan, during Japan’s Shōwa period, (the period of “radiant” Japan).

He was born two years after the Kanto Earthquake and tsunami that followed, which had destroyed about 75% of Tokyo.

Yukio Mishima lived through World War II, and during that time Tokyo was bombed repeatedly.The bombing of Tokyo in 1944 and 1945 destroyed the half of the city and up to 200,000 were killed.

Both the Kanto Earthquake and World War II brought great devastation to Tokyo and Japan as a whole. However by 1962, Japan had recovered. The population exceeded 10,000,000 making it the largest city in the world. Japan was also becoming more and more westernized.

The 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo greatly healed Tokyo’s reputation since the end of the war. The city became a place of pride and enormous sums of money and energy were spent on upgrading the city.
